i like never do this & im sorry to hijack yr post (especially seeing as you are a person i do not know!!) but another thing im seeing on these playlists is an absolutely abysmal amount of black artists. spider-punk is and has always been a black character, and black people are frequently pushed out of alternative and subcultural spaces, so i'm going to offer some black punk artists i personally enjoy for i guess playlist consideration aimed towards some of the ppl in the notes, although this isn't definitive & hobie's taste will of course not necessarily be my own.

also to note before we get into this is that punk is a culture of resistance. hobie in specific (though i don't know how much of this will be part of his characterization in the spiderverse trilogy going forward---he's pretty different in atsv, which isn't a bad thing) has been depicted in the comics as a homeless teenager living under a fascist government. regardless of whether or not that depiction is accurate for this version of hobie is irrelevant for now; the point i'm making is that his attachment to punk is not purely aesthetic in nature. i think keeping the radical aspects of punk in general and of spider-punk in specific in mind are important when discussing the character.

anyway.

  • death (this one is kind of essential in terms of punk history. they started recording songs under the band name death in 1971 and disbanded in 1977, but their music was only relatively recently properly released. they've been occasionally cited as the first punk band ever.)
  • pure hell (another early & extremely influential punk group, this one from 1974. in contrast with the isolation death operated within, pure hell were heavily involved in the early punk scene.)
  • bad brains (originally an american jazz group who became punk with a reggae fusion. they cite pure hell as an early influence, which is pretty cool.)
  • x-ray spex (70s english punk band fronted by poly styrene, whose vocals greatly influenced the later riot grrrl movement. notable for lyrical attacks on commercialism and corporate artifice.)
  • zulu (i fucking love zulu so much guys you should all listen to zulu right now. they're frequently described as powerviolence, which is accurate, but they also incorporate elements from various historically black genres, like funk, jazz, & soul. you can listen to one zulu album and get a ton of different musical experiences it rules.)
  • bob vylan (london-based punk rap duo. to me they're like the ideal of what punk set out to be in the first place, ideologically speaking. i don't even know what else to say here. if you're interested in modern punk and aren't listening to bob vylan you should be. they're insanely skilled and deserve to be the center of the conversation.)

this post has gone on long enough you get the gist. & if you actually feel inspired enough to want to make a 100% accurate spider-punk playlist, get into your local scene and see what's playing there. it's what he would want, probably.

I wish Americans fucked with more foreign music. You don’t have to know the language to appreciate a good record. Folks in other countries listen to our music and don’t speak a lick of english. Music needs no translator

I personally found myself loving 1970s Ghana, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire! Also 1920s and 1970s Japan for sure! Cambodian music: spectacular. Love Armenia and Mali as well. I’ve been told 70s Germany is weird and 30s Algeria is cool but I haven’t gotten around to those yet. Italy’s 1960s is bomb ofc but I’m biased ;)

We need to let people use labels they identify with freely and stop vilifying them when they come to the conclusion they aren't what they thought and change the labels they use to better fit their self descriptions.

People figuring themselves out means they can end up trying labels like tshirts and find that maybe the label they found most fitting at the time didn't keep on fitting as time went on and they learned more about themselves, and that's okay

Example: If you once identified as bi and then realized you were actually ace because equal attraction to both genders (and more) just so happened to be zero? Valid. Glad you went on this journey. Did it myself. I used to identify as straight and then maybe bi. I got "crushes" in which I'd get interested in a person and then rapidly pull back if they ever reciprocated because the idea was nice but the reality was I had no interest in acting on the very fleeting feeling of attraction. I identify now as aro ace because I have no real interest in pursuing relationships, romantic or sexual in nature. Maybe that'll change in the future. Maybe not.

Another example, you identify as gay/lesbian but find you do have an attraction to the opposite gender (or more) and find you're bisexual or pansexual? Valid. Glad you went on this journey. (Even if you find you're only 20% attracted to men and 80% women, you're still a valid bisexual if you find that label comfortable to use.)

If you were ace until you found someone you are sexually attracted to and decide that label doesn't fit you anymore, you are valid. If you did the same thing but still identify as ace, you are still valid. If you did the same thing and want to adjust your label, gray-ace comes to mind, you are still valid.

What's not okay is being an asshole and yelling at those people, looking for community and understanding, who end up changing their minds when they go through realizations and find they want to find another label that better fits them.

Quit fucking policing other queer people. Quit starting in-fights and doing the bigots job for them because they will gladly watch us tear each other apart and wait until you're done to finish the fight and get rid of all of us.

If you want to be ambiguous, you can call yourself queer. It's not a slur. It means ambiguous. It's faster to say than reciting the ever growing inclusive alphabet of LGBTQIA. It means some form of not straight and/or not cisgender.

And if you don't want to use labels, you are valid. You don't have to. Anyone trying to force you to label yourself against your will is an asshole.

You don't owe anyone an explanation.

(don't tag this as q-slur, I will send shadow spiders to haunt your nightmares and steal your ankles.)

Practical tip for those dealing with wildfire smoke now: you can make a very effective air filter for a reasonable amount of money using a box fan & one of those filters meant for your furnace.

Also, I've managed to pick up 2 of the box fans for very cheap/free from yard sales. Make sure you get a filter rated for wildfire smoke, I think this one cost about $20.

These make a huge difference in the indoor air quality.

turtlesandfrogs

Posting again because of the fire situation up in Canada and resulting smoke. If you're dealing with wildfire smoke, these are surprisingly effective and relatively cheap.

Just tape the filter to the fan, making sure the air can't sneak around the edges. I used painter's tape, but I'm sure duct tape or similar would work just as well.

We are not going to let that fuckwad DeSantis gain a foothold in the 2024 election.

You are going to fucking vote for Joe Biden, and you are going to give us a fucking chance to save our country from fascism, and you aren't going to fucking complain about it, because there is literally no other choice.

We will not let another election be a close call. Are you listening?

Vote for Biden. Vote for whatever Democrat is most popular in your local elections. Our system sucks, but this is what we're working with. Just fucking vote.

"But he's --"

It doesn't matter. It does. not. matter.

Not every battle is about progress. Sometimes it's just holding the line until we get reinforcements. And they are coming. The Gen Z vote was monumental in stopping the red wave, and there are increasing numbers as more and more come of age.

Hold the line.

beatrice-otter

I want to push back on the battle “not being about progress.” Because /Biden has accomplished a lot, actually, especially given a Republican-controlled House. One could argue that he hasn’t gone far enough, but that’s not the same as having accomplished nothing. So here’s some things Biden has done:

1) Raised taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

2) Highest appointment of federal judges since Reagan. Reagan started a trend of Republicans packing federal courts with uber-conservative judges, and blocking Democrat appointments, which is how we ended up with our current Supreme Court. Biden is doing his absolute best to turn the scales back the other direction by appointing as many liberal and left-wing judges as he can, as fast as he can.

3) $1.2 trillion dollar infrastructure package that will pour federal money into things like public transit, high-speed internet in places that don’t have it (which are overwhelmingly poor, and cut off from the rest of the world), and a whole lot of other basic things that make life easier for ordinary people.

4) Halted Federal executions. This doesn’t affect state-level convictions, but it does affect federal-level executions; those are completely off the table for as long as he (or any other) Democrat is President. (13 people were executed under Trump)

5) Rejoining the Paris Climate Accords and pushing for other environmental care legislation,

6) Pushed through the “Inflation Reduction Act” (named that to get Republicans to be willing to allow it through). It’s actually the largest climate bill in U.S. history and allows Medicare to negotiate the prices of certain prescription drugs for the first time. It includes 369 billion for a climate initiative to reduce greenhouse emissions and promote lean energy technologies. $300 billion in new revenue through a corporate tax increase. $80 billion for the Internal Revenue Service to hire new agents, modernize its technology, audit the wealthy and more. A $2,000 annual cap for out-of-pocket prescription drug costs for those insured by Medicare.

6) Overturned Trump’s ban on transgender people serving in the military.

7) Re-authorized the Violence Against Women Act

8) Pardoned marijuana

9) Forgave student loan debt (this one the Republicans in congress managed to partially stymie, but that’s not Biden’s fault--it’s the Republicans).

10) Managed to get a modest gun-safety bill through the gauntlet of Republican opposition. (The first one anyone’s managed to get passed in decades.) It’s far from perfect, or enough, but it did expand background checks on gun purchases and made it easier to prosecute illegal gun trafficking. And the reason it was as weak as it was, is because the Republicans have a majority in the House and they blocked anything stronger, it’s the Republicans’ fault. Not Biden’s. If we want sensible nationwide gun control, we have GOT to get the House a Democrat majority.

11) Passed a long-stalled Post Office reform bill.

There’s a lot there! And the things that he promised but didn’t manage to achieve, he put them before Congress and the Republicans in the House stopped them. If Democrats controlled the House as well as the Senate, most of them would have passed and now be the law of the land! The problem is not Biden.

Biden may not be very exciting, and he may not be as far left as we want. But he’s still got a lot done in the last three years.
